Migrate Lightning Conductor Farm Solution from one version of SharePoint Server to another

This article is about Lightning Conductor WSP migration from SharePoint 2013 or 2016 to SharePoint 2016, 2019, or Subscription Edition.

NOTE: You must be a SharePoint Farm Administrator to perform the following tasks.

You will need a new license key for your new SharePoint environment. Please contact your Lightning Tools account manager or help@lightningtools.com and inform them about your migration plans, and how many production and non-production WFE and other servers you will have.

Please make sure before migrating that you are using the latest LCWP version in your current SharePoint environment.

NOTE: To allow your existing LCWP rollups to migrate smoothly, please use the PreserveSiteID parameter when using the Restore-SPSite cmdlet during your SharePoint migration process. If you are using a migration tool, if it’s possible to retain site and web application GUIDs during migration, that will make your LCWP migration smoother. If necessary, Lightning Tools can provide a mapping tool to use post-migration, but it’s best if the location references can remain the same.

As always, it is recommended to attempt this procedure in a Test environment prior to attempting in Production.

Procedure

After SharePoint has been migrated to 2016/2019/SE, uninstall the existing Lightning Conductor Web Part (LCWP) solution file (retract and then remove the WSP in Central Administration).

Add and deploy the LCWP 2016 (the 2016 WSP is used for SP2019 and SPSE) solution file available from the Lightning Tools Download Center.

Existing instances of the LCWP within your sites will be updated to the new version the first time a user visits that page.

All existing rollups will continue to work (assuming that the same SharePoint site and list structure has been migrated to SharePoint 2016/2019/SE).

NOTE: If you will be using modern pages in SP 2019/SE, then you'll want to eventually move to the SharePoint 2019 build of the Lightning Conductor client-side SPFx web part – you'll find this build in the SharePoint 2019 folder of the CSWP download package.
